25 January 2012 Bordeaux 'still commanding illustrious prices'
Bordeaux can still command high prices from wine investors all over the world, one writer has said.
"At the moment, Bordeaux is perfectly capable of continuing to sell its most illustrious wines at their most illustrious prices," claimed Stuart Walton, chairman of the Circle of Wine Writers.
However, he added that the industry will strengthen, particularly within Europe and the US, when the global economy improves and suggested that the influence of the Chinese economy will also have an impact.
When the dust settles over the Eurozone, Mr Walton said the industry "will have completely weathered the storm … but it will be very much with the help of the Chinese market".
After a disappointing end to 2011 in the Bordeaux fine wine market, January has got off to a positive start. The Liv-ex Fine Wine Exchange reported that all five first growth brands have seen increased demand and the Fine Wine 50 index has risen by more than 1.5 per cent.
