11 January 2012 Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 makes gains in 2012
The Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 index has got the year off to a good start, ending the first week of the year with a gain of 0.97 per cent.
It comes after months of price falls and the index was largely helped by a few popular wines.
The 2002 and 2007 vintage of Latour performed the strongest over the week, gaining 13.57 per cent and 11.28 per cent respectively over the period.
Haut Brion 2002, Mouton Rothschild 2001 and Lafite Rothschild 2007 also made strong gains last week of between five and 8.18 per cent.
However, figures from the Liv-ex Fine Wine Exchange show that Margaux could be the latest wine to fall out of favour. It represented four of the five biggest fallers of the week, with the 2001 vintage dropping 6.67 per cent.
Lafite 2000 also fell by a notable 4.4 per cent.
Putting further confidence back into the fine wine market, the Liv-ex Claret Chip index also ended the first week of January with a 0.71 per cent gain.
Investors will surely hope that these steady rises continue throughout the month.
