| Pichon Baron | 2005 | 12×75cl | £1,025 | 6 | 94 | ![]() ![]() |
| As usual, this superb Pauillac possesses an inky/blue/black color in addition to a big, sweet nose of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, black currant liqueur, and toasty vanillin from new oak casks. Full-bodied with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, the 2005 Pichon Baron is more backward than the blockbuster 2003 or prodigious 2000. Nevertheless, it is a superb effort whose power, length, and tannic structure suggest it should be at its peak between 2015-2035. | ||||||
| Pichon Baron | 2009 | 12×75cl | £1,300 | 1 | 98 | ![]() ![]() |
| Revealing incredible quality and performing better than it did from barrel, the 2009 appears to be the greatest Pichon Longueville Baron since the 1990 and 1989. An amazing opaque blue/purple color is followed by scents of spring flowers, graphite, smoky charcoal, incense, blackberries, blueberries and hints of coffee and chocolate. Incredibly intense, pure and flawlessly constructed with extravagant layers of fruit and richness, this offering has developed beautifully under the management of Christian Seeley. It is a voluptuous, opulent Pichon Longueville Baron that may eclipse anything they have made in the past. This brilliant wine should be at its peak between 2018 and 2045. | ||||||
| Pichon Baron | 2010 | 12×75cl | £1,480 | 5 | 97-99 | ![]() ![]() |
| Jancis: Decanter: Neal Martin: /> Parker review: 2010: A prodigious, blockbuster effort from Pichon Longueville Baron, the 2010 is reminiscent of this estate’s titanic offerings in 1989 and 1990, but may be even greater with 30 years of longevity. Kudos to proprietor AXA and general director Christian Seeley. It was absolutely compelling on each of the three times I tasted it. Black/purple-colored with super concentration and richness as well as full body, it offers an awesome display of creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, licorice, camphor and spring flowers. Stunningly pure and unctuously textured with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, this superstar of the vintage is definitely a wine to purchase as a future. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040. | ||||||

Château Pichon Baron
Pichon Baron, a leading second growth, is the fraternal relation of Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, indeed, for much of their history each comprised a part of the same estate. It was, as is so often the case in European wine tradition, through marriage that the chateaux were to become two, each now as famous as the other and among the most respected and established chateaux in the Medoc, indeed Bordeaux.
Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville took the helm of the whole estate at just 19 years of age, his tenure was remarkable ceding only upon his death, in 1850, 71 years later, at 90. The estate was divided in equal parts between his five children, to his three daughters he bequeathed what was to become Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, then Pichon Lalande. To his two sons were given those vineyards upon which was founded Pichon Baron. In the few years following their father’s death, Raoul, the Baron Pichon Lalande, ran the estate as one for it later to be divided as we find it today.
In 1933, the Bouteiller’s, descendents of the official wine steward to the King, acquired Pichon Baron. Theirs was a comparatively short tenure, indeed Pichon Baron suffered somewhat from a lack of investment during the 1960s and 1970s, in which period it was bought by AXA insurance group. The company brought with them Jean Michel Cazes, of Chateaux Lynch Bages. Jean Michel Cazes immediately undertook much needed renovation and in just three years had placed Pichon Baron back among the top echelons of Medoc chateaux, producing among the world’s finest wines.
There was a dip in quality during the 1990s, however, Jean Michel Cazes stewarded the chateau until his retirement in 2000, handing the reigns to Christian Seely, who took over all 7 wine properties of the AXA group, after already having managed some of its major properties since 1993; Chateau Suduiraut, Chateau Petit Village and Quinta do Noval. Throughout the 2000s Pichon Baron has produced some of the finest wines of Bordeaux with vintages such as 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010.
Style
Pichon Baron has seen a great renaissance in style producing text book Pauillac, expressing a deeply flavoured, spicy style with Cohiba and cedarwood notes.
