Bordeaux 2014 - Margaux

Chateau Margaux has released its Grand and Second Vin today. As expected, they have released the Grand Vin at the same price as Mouton and Haut Brion, making it yet another very compelling First Growth to buy now at £2320 per case.

Chateau Margaux is definitely one of our favourite wines of the vintage and showed lovely, black cherry fruit on the nose with extraordinary balance and density.

The Pavillon Rouge (£760 per case) is also extremely good and very serious for a second wine. We all commented that it is probably of equal quality to many vintages of the Grand Vin made before the 1990s!

Please find below the offer:

Margaux 2014
£2320 IB per case of 12 bottles / £1160 IB per case of 6 bottles

‘The Château Margaux 2014, represents 36% of the year’s total production and is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a distinctly floral bouquet, those trademark wilted violet scents soaring from the glass flanked by small dark cherries and a hint of cassis. It gains intensity in the glass but never puts the pedal to the floor. The palate is full-bodied with firm and bold tannins, very good density and presence. No, compared to the top flight vintages from the estate, it is unlikely to become a Château Margaux of compelling precision or finesse. Unusually for 2014 this is a grand vin bestowed with power and dimension. There is still a little tightness here, especially on the Pauillac-like finish, but it will turn into a great if not the greatest Château Margaux. 93-95 points.’ Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

‘This is a very, very muscular and toned Margaux with currants, firm tannins and stones. Full and chewy yet polished and intense. Bright acidity yet a strong and flexed style. 94-95 points.’ James Suckling

‘The 2014 Margaux opens with a wonderfully aromatic, expressive bouquet. Gracious and medium in body, the 2014 is quite understated. Dark red cherry, plum, herbs, cedar, smoke and tobacco gradually come forward in a super-refined, totally polished wine. Today, the 2014 is holding back quite a bit of its potential, but the style is one of finesse rather than pure power. 93-96 points.’ Antonio Galloni

Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 2014
£760 IB per case of 12 bottles

‘The Pavillon Rouge de Margaux 2014 is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, which Paul Pontallier remarked is almost the same as the grand vin 20 years ago. The nose needs time to coalesce in the glass – a little disjointed at first, though it “finds its groove” and offers ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruits, perhaps richer than I was anticipating. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, almost corpulent opening: a mixture of red and black fruit and a pinch of white pepper. There is good weight in the mouth, quite linear with a nicely controlled, quite mineral-rich finish. This is a very fine Pavillon Rouge ’14 that will probably need three or four years in bottle. Drink: 2018 - 2030. 89-91 points.’ Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

‘This is very structured and strong for the second wine of Pavillon Rouge. Full and very chewy. Yet it's ripe and intense. Makes you think. Very well done. 92-93 points.’ James Suckling

E&OE May 2015.
