Domaine Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive has been producing some of the finest white wines from the best vineyards in Burgundy for decades. It is always a pleasure to drink their wines as they have an inimitable spicy character which makes them not only unique in Burgundy, but in the world as well.
The domaine was an early adherent to biodynamics, gaining certification in 1997. This dedication to the vineyard and to the winemaking certainly shows through in the wines, where every vintage is different in character but the quality is always extremely high, putting them squarely in the top handful of Burgundy's greatest wines.
We have been able to secure a few of their Grands Crus recently which we can offer at competitive prices:
2 cases of 6 bottles Batard Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Leflaive 2008
£1390 In Bond per case
'Here the nose is notably tighter and more reserved with aromas of citrus blossom and zest, spice, smoke, fennel and hints of acacia that introduce big, muscular and wonderfully complex broad-scaled flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for a similar period thereafter. This too is terrific and very Bâtard and like the Combettes, the '08 version is one of the very best young examples from Leflaive that I have ever seen. 96 points.' Allen Meadows, Burghound
1 case of 6 bottles Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Leflaive 2008
£1790 In Bond
'Even after 5 years the nose remains restrained but exceptionally elegant and pure with aromas of white flower, green apple, pear and wet stone. There is plenty of minerality to the rich, full and highly energetic flavors that tighten up considerably on the detailed, minerally and moderately dry finish that displays distinct citrus and mineral nuances. This is still quite tight and linear with huge amounts of dry extract that renders the very firm acid spine almost invisible at present though the hugely finish is clearly shaped by it. This magnificent Chevalier should be a genuine stunner in 10 to 12 years. Note that after an hour of air this really opened up so while it remains very youthful, it's not so tight that you couldn't enjoy a bottle provided that you decanted it for 30+ minutes first. 97 points.' 1 case of 12 bottles Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Leflaive 2011
£3550 In Bond
'An ultra-elegant, pure and strikingly expressive nose of airy and intensely spicy acacia blossom, wet stone, lemon peel and various white-fleshed fruit aromas. There is a lilting mouth feel to the gorgeously intense, precise and cuts-like-a-knife medium weight plus flavors that brim with mineral and an abundance of dry extract that coats the palate on the hugely long finish. The balance is impeccable and this will be one of the relatively few 2011s that should amply reward longer-term cellaring. 93-96 points.' Allen Meadows, Burghound
